Grieving the Life You Were Supposed to Have

The life you want doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through decisions, habits, and the way you choose to show up every day. A lot of people focus on the outcome — the lifestyle, the success, the freedom — but they don’t prepare for the version of themselves that can actually sustain it.

Preparation starts with clarity. You need to know what kind of life you’re trying to build. Not just in a general way, but in detail. How do your days look? How do you spend your time? What kind of work are you doing? What kind of people are around you? When you’re clear on that, your decisions start to change.
Then comes alignment. The life you want requires a certain level of discipline, focus, and consistency. If your current habits don’t match that, you’ll always feel like you’re chasing something that stays out of reach. Preparation is about closing that gap — step by step.
It also means being honest about what needs to change. Sometimes it’s your routine, sometimes it’s your environment, and sometimes it’s your mindset. Growth is not always comfortable, but it’s necessary if you want something different.
You also have to learn how to delay immediate comfort for long-term results. The life you want will ask you to be consistent when it’s easier to stop, to stay focused when it’s easier to get distracted, and to keep going when results are not immediate. That’s part of the process.
Preparation is not just about doing more. It’s about doing the right things with intention. It’s about choosing actions that move you closer to your vision, even if they seem small in the moment. Over time, those actions build momentum.
Your environment plays a bigger role than you think. The spaces you’re in, the people you’re around, and the content you consume all influence how you think and act. If you want a different life, you have to start creating an environment that supports it.
Another important part of preparation is learning how to trust the process. Not everything will happen immediately, and not everything will go as planned. But if you stay consistent and intentional, progress will come.
And finally, preparation is about becoming. Before you have the life you want, you have to become the person who can handle it. The way you think, the way you act, and the way you show up has to evolve.
Because the life you want is not something you wait for. It’s something you prepare for, build, and grow into — one decision at a time.
